History is consistently one of the most popular optional subjects at GCSE and A-Level. Pupils who study History have a unique opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the past that can not only develop a deep love of subject, and engender new ways of thinking and questioning, but also helps them make sense of the complex world of today. History continues to be a very highly regarded subject for applications to the most competitive universities, as well as a range of attractive careers, and it develops valuable transferable skills such as analysis, written and verbal communication and critical reading which benefit pupils in all their academic pursuits.
Studying History should be a joy, and a GCSE or A-Level course in History often ignites a passion for the past that lasts a lifetime. At The Cambridge Tutor Company we work first and foremost to instil a love of subject. By working with students to see the benefits and joys of the subject we see an increase in motivation and a subsequent improvement in achievement. Carefully tailored extension and enrichment – through verbal as well as written approaches – helps students reimagine their own potential and aspirations.
It is vital that a student's enthusiasm for the subject is combined with an intimate knowledge of the syllabus, the requisite subject knowledge, and the specific focus of each question - by knowing exactly what they need to do, and more importantly exactly how to do it, a student can achieve their full potential and stand out from other candidates. Our History tuition always starts with a careful diagnosis of each individual students’ strengths, so they can build on these, and careful targeting of the areas to focus on that will make a real difference to the final results.
History students at GCSE and A-Level have to master a broad range of subject knowledge, from a range of different periods, as well as grasping the conceptual connections between different elements they are studying. As well as needing depth and accuracy of subject knowledge, GCSE and A-Level historians must also be proficient in contextualised analysis of historical sources and be able to respond confidently and critically to interpretations of the past produced after the events themselves. At A-Level an additional demand is made on students’ independent research skills when they independently develop and execute an extended historical investigation, a positive outcome in which can put them in a strong position going into the examinations. At The Cambridge Tutor Company we support students to build effective personal study and revision programmes that complement their work with their tutor to help them with all the requirements of their History GCSE or A-Level course in a balanced and personalised way, so they are fully prepared for final examinations.
